All the stores and businesses on that block are suddenly gone except for most of the red building, which is the historic Danville Hotel. The town is planning to renovate that structure and build the rest of the block up with boring cookie-cutter upper-middle-class modern retail shops/cafes and apparently some apartments. Unless there was some structural problem with this strip mall, I'm not sure how it couldn't meet the needs of what they're planning.
