I think I can surmise what the German commentators think just by looking at their emotions

Well, it's a decent replica The proportions are inaccurate, but not too noticable unless you're looking at a real R8 alongside.

But still, why?

#3, If you've got some extremely cheap, early 90's American made sport compacts lying around, why not?

#1, Apparently they aren't German; they're Dutch.

A few of the comments:

"ugliest R8 that i have ever seen and a shit replica"

"This is real nothing! You screw a beautiful carriage, and a lot of money"

"He does not seem real on r8 but he is beautiful… if you do not consider that it must present r8"

"he is a piece longer and high"

"Certainly not done badly! I have seen very worse replicas."

I like it. Yes it's a replica, but it's proportions aren't way off like most of them.

Oh, and this is apparently a Cougar, not a Probe.

#10, same thing :P

Cougar was essentially a third-generation Probe AFAIK.

aside from obvious large panel gaps and small wheels in the back, this looks - if you dont judge it by proportion, by execution with what he had to work with is pretty darn respectable. I like it. but wouldnt own one.

#11, I take issue with that... yes, it was replaced by the "Ford Cougar" in Europe, which came here as the Mercury Cougar... but the Probe was an American-designed coupe based on a Mazda platform, and the Ford/Mercury Cougar was a European-designed coupe based on the Mondeo platform... I would never consider them part of the same "line" of cars...

That would be like saying the Mercury Villager and Mercury Monterey were essentially the same thing.

#13, Yes and no.

While its true they were not the same platform, the Cougar essentially replaced the Probe; resonably priced sporting coupe, FWD, could be had in base and sporty versions; also, while the Probe was designed for North America, the car itself seemed to receive better press in Europe than here. Same holds true for the Cougar.

edit: from wikipedia "The Ford Cougar is a large coupé car in the European market between 1998 and 2002, and the Australian market between 1999 and 2004, and sold in the United States from 1999 to 2002 as the Mercury Cougar. The car was originally intended to be the third generation Probe, but after a rationalisation of the three coupés available in the United States, the Probe name was dropped in favour of the Cougar."

#14, So, by that logic, the Ford Probe can be considered the "same thing" as a Mustang, since that was its original intention?

#15, no because the Mustang is not FWD, nor does it share a wheelbase with the Probe. Also, the Mustang name wasn't replaced, either.
