I believe this is the new-for-1966 "DPL" 990 hardtop....basically a trim package that included some exclusive exterior pieces, bucket seats, and a console.
1966 was the final year the AMC 327 was offered in the Ambassador. The 327 was always a pretty hot motor, and the 4 barrel version was making 270 horsepower that year. When combined with the 4 speed (new for '66) and a Twin Grip rear, it made the Ambassadors move a bit quicker than they looked.
Alas, the lack of a V-emblem on the front fender of this one should denote the 232 I6, which made a decent 150 horsepower. It most likely has the 3 speed "Shift Command" automatic transmission, too. |

#2, Curious....there should be a "V8" emblem beneath the Ambassador script on the fender. Maybe I'm mistaken, or maybe the emblem fell off (though I see no evidence that it was there to begin with). |
