From the german wikipedia (can't pass up an oppurtunity to use engrish :P)
BMW E1 is a prototype of an electric vehicle of BMW. The E1 was introduced 1991 on the IAA by BMW in Frankfurt.
The E1 is a 2+2-Sitzer, only 3.4 m long however with 1,60 m broad nearly as broad as a BMW at that time of the 3er-Reihe. Likewise the Design language of the BMW models at that time was taken over, like the vitreous double headlights in front.
The characteristic of this model is that it concerns here a pure electric vehicle. The engine, which is installed over the rear axle directly, carries 45 HP out and delivers its Kraft, as at BMW usual, to the rear wheels. The maximum speed is with 120 km/h, the acceleration of 0-50 km/h at six seconds. The sodium/sulfur battery with 120 V and 19 KW/H makes energy available for approx. 250 km, until BMW E1 again for 6-8 hours to the plug socket must. For the time the brake energy recovery is outstanding. It was realized by rims with integrated drum brakes, so that the accumulator was again loaded by the brake energy. [1]
The E1 was manufactured by BMW never in series and it existed also only one model of this type. Direct competitors would be for the E1 the AUDI a2 or Mercedes A-class adjusted in the meantime. According to a source this prototype is to be burned down, why the E1/1 was built. [2]
