looks like a great way to remove dirt, paint, and anything else from a fender well! |

Not a Firestone? *runs*
BTW, what's the situation in the USA? Is regrooving still popular?
Back in the communist times over here regrooving was the only way to provide some rubber even for passenger cars. One day a regrooved tire blew @ 90kph in my dad's Fiat 126, we're alive only because he somehow managed to keep it from spinning and most likely flipping on and on, spilling us all over like rag dolls. |

#3, yeah, most guys here (cheap truck drivers) recap/retread their tires, this one was a recapped michelin that decided to go boom.
Retreadding is banned for anything passenger though, cars/pickup trucks. only big rig trucks can run recapped tires on the drive axles or trailers, no retreadding allowed on steering tires

#4, Yeah, my dad would never put a recap on the front.
Speaking of recapping a Polish company Markgum has set up a business of retreading street and competition tires with sport/competition compounds. Cheap, but the quality of the product varies. |

#5, sounds like it could work, but i'd be that much more scared of blowing out at higher competition speeds |

#6, Never heard of a blowout but stuff like the whole thread (or the 'face' of the tire, meaning where thread should be) peeling off, tires impossible to balance or simply subpar grip. Still, they improve their product and Markgum is the choice for a budget amateur racer. They're as popular as R rubber in the west.
Part of that popularity stems from the fact that when they use a street tire carcass, you end up with a 'street' tire (with the E-something mark) but with sport/competition grip: that's bending the rules and results in endless driver/event official battles.
Here's their online catalogue with tire photos:

#3, Semi-related to the discussion: In American truckers' slang, slung tire treads of recaps lying in the road (a common sight on the highways) are referred to as "gators." |
