R.O.B. helped the NES get on shelves as a "toy" and not a videogame machine... ...and apparently, the whole front-loading-flap-dealy was to make it resmemble a VCR, to further distance it from previous videogame consoles. ...and really, the styling of the NES still looks good... not really all that dated, considering its age.
