R.O.B. may not have been popular or a big seller, but it helped sway some people to the NES... after the whole videogame crash of '83, no one wanted to touch a videogame console with a 10-foot-pole... R.O.B. helped the NES get on shelves as a "toy" and not a videogame machine...

...and apparently, the whole front-loading-flap-dealy was to make it resmemble a VCR, to further distance it from previous videogame consoles.

...and really, the styling of the NES still looks good... not really all that dated, considering its age.
