It's getting to the point where I believe that if a non-performance-oriented compact (or smaller) car is designed *for* America, it's a bland, bloated, ugly piece of chintzy junk... but if it was designed for Europe or Japan, and then *adapted* for the American market, it's quite decent...

Designed *for* America:
- 2nd-gen Scion xB
- Chevy Cobalt
- current USDM Honda Civic
- Dodge Caliber
- current facelifted Ford Focus

Adapted for America:
- 1st-gen Scion xB
- Suzuki SX4
- Infiniti G20
- Scion xA and xD
- Original Ford Focus hatchback

...the Chevy Cruze may be a good car, since it was designed for Europe by Daewoo, and will be adapted for the American market.

...I think the reason is, car marketers firmly believe that Americans will only buy *cheap* compact cars, so when designing cars with them in mind, they skimp on materials, engineering, and style to bring the price down... (cont'd)

...but with cars brought from elsewhere in the world, they start with a good, stylish car, and sometimes cheapen some things here and there, but the car's still got good styling and engineering inherent... or in the case with the G20, they simply sell it as an upscale car without cheapening any of the materials...

European and Japanese consumers expect high quality in a car, no matter how small it is... look at the Golf... it's considered a nice family car... in America, aside from the GTi, it doesn't sell extremely well, because who wants a little hatchback that costs more than $19,000? ...at least, that's what American marketers think... the new MINI has done a lot to sway people's minds about how much Americans will spend on a small car... if it's a GOOD small car.

#1, The Cobalt doesn't seem so bad....I wouldn't mind having an SS. And this is coming from someone who generally doesn't care for 4 cylinders, turbochargers, or FWD.

#3, Notice I said "non-performance-oriented"... the standard Cobalt is no better than the Cavalier it replaced... which wouldn't be so bad, if this were still 1995.

The Cobalt SS, they stuck a real nice forced-induction engine and tuned the suspension well... those little tweaks make it a nice car.

#6, Agreed. I've sat in both; the Cobalt is considerably better.

#7, I sat in a base Cobalt and a loaded Malibu LTZ. I honestly was more comfortable in the Cobalt. :/
