Description:
1977 Steamin' Demon world record steam car, built to break a speed record set in 1906 by a Stanley Steamer. No really, it was. The driver said that at 140 mph, the Demon's "door jiggled loose and blew off and, at the end of the run, the engine compartment was on fire." Top speed: 145.607 mph. Its record, set on August 19, 1985, still stands.

Not a very competitive record, huh? For only two new records to have been set in 104 years.

#2, What's so dangerous about taking a high pressure steel boiler down the saltflats in a flimsy vehicle at 140mph?

Exploding steam boilers are fun! Ask the people in Crush, Texas all about that one!

#4, Wow, that was an interesting Wikipedia article to read... the guy had good intentions to entertain people, but, damn, that was not thought out properly.

#5, It's a shame there was no movie footage shot of it, though some of the photographs are pretty amazing: http://petticoatsandpistols.com/wp-...t-of-impact.jpg
