Yugoslavian-license copies of these were known as the Zastava Ficha, and were incredibly popular in the Balkans (not that people had much choice when it came to buying a car). The model that replaced it in the 80s' would become infamous in the US as the Yugo.

Yeah, the Zastava 750 was like THE car of Yugoslavia... most former-Yugoslavian nation journalists consider it to be the car of the century, as far as they're concerned.

It's interesting that Yugoslavia wasn't quite as socialist as most Eastern Bloc nations, allowing the market to have *some* freedom and not be entirely under the thumb of the government... Despite being a bit economically smaller than many other Communist nations, it managed to get its people some cars just as fast, if not faster.
