Huh, so, apparently, these were sold in this manner because Pontiac didn't exist in Mexico until the mid '90s.

Funny enough, a "Cavalier" is currently being sold in Mexico https://www.chevrolet.com.mx/autos/familiares-cavalier

Mexico had a lot of market oddities like this. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera was also sold as the Chevrolet Cutlass, and the Mercury Marquis was the Ford Marquis.

#4, IMCDB confirms it. That movie also had a Ford Cougar in a background shot.
