I'd like to get a Datsun 200SX, an FJ24 engine, and then build it up as close as I could to a 240RS.

#1, Then drive it to the end of the world through gravel, snow and ice... then turn back and do it again.
Once upon a time motorsport was a test of endurance, only the toughest motherfuckers got to the finish line. I want these times back.

#3, The *true* Paris-Dakar was kinda like that... where terrain wasn't the *only* danger...

#4, I think the current one is still like that too. What you see on TV are only 15-20 top teams, what you don't see are tenths of amateurs behind them. There are guys who only bring whatever can fit into the back of their car/truck and some riders who don't own any spares at all. They sleep in the tents set up by the officials and when something breaks, they buy spares and try to fix stuff themselves. This means some of them sleep for 2 hours maximum (remeber they usually arrive at the service area last).
But seriously, old WRC rallies often had upwards of 1000kms of special stages (not counting liason stages) when now they have aournd 300km. Bah.
