Description:
First in a series of photos depicting the effects of a 1950s atomic bomb test on an old REO school bus.

In the first picture, the bomb has just been set off, and already the heat is baking the paint, particularly visible on the roof.

Within a second, smoke begins to uniformly rise from the paint: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/Bombbus2.jpg

A split second after that, the entire bus ignites: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/Bombbus3.jpg

The shockwave from the blast hits the bus. Although the bus is not close enough to the blast to suffer damage from the shockwave, it's still strong enough to momentarily extinguish the fire: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/Bombbus4.jpg

....which then reignites after the shockwave passes: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/Bombbus5.jpg

Smoke billows as the fire accelerates: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/Bombbus6.jpg

After the heat subsides. Note the warping of the sheetmetal, especially around the fenders: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/Bombbus7.jpg

This is from the Upshot-Knothole-Grable tests, BTW, in 1953. Here's a video of the various tests, along the video footage of this bus (finally ending with the secondary shockwave punching in the side of the bus and sending it flipping).

Note also the test to the Willys Jeep wagon, a planted forest, and various structures.

Probably the most famous filmed test, for all the filmed destruction of vehicles, houses, etc.

ANd what did we learn today kiddies? A tent is no place to be during a nuclear holocaust

I've always wanted to know how they managed to keep the camera still and not on fire or blown away by the blast.

#4, AFAIK, it's shot at quite a long distance away, with an extreme zoom.
