Description:
I was getting the distinct impression that the Sentra was headed down a one-way street to unreliability... just a gut feeling, and it still had a fair amount of instrinsic value, trade-in-wise.

New car. ...and I mean "New", as in, it had less than 50 miles on it when I bought it.

2011 Mazda2 Touring. 2300lbs, and it "feels" a lot like my old Mirage, but much more solid, and WAY better equipped.

A bit belated, but I hit the 1-year anniversary of owning this car... I've also put 15,000 miles on it in the first year... my work commute is a bit lengthy (but mostly highway travel, thank goodness)...

I'm still loving this car. I'm treating it right, and it's treating me right. I still get comments and compliments about it quite often. I like that, despite its miniscule size, it isn't *styled* in a "cutesy" way...

#19, Something else I realized... the taillights are already rather high on the car... the original version of this gen of Demio/2 had the turn signals placed at the top of the bezels...

...with the brake-lights now at the top of the bezels, the car looks unusually "tall" when you see it when it's dark out (I'm basing this on another 2 I saw driving down the freeway one early morning)...

...and yes, I'm thrilled to FINALLY be seeing more Mazda2's out in the real world... Mazda's actually successfully selling a few of them!

#23, I actually have no qualms about the Fiesta's styling... if there had been a Ford dealership that actually had a Fiesta hatch in stock, I might have seriously considered one. But the four dealerships within [reasonable] driving distance only had the sedans.

...but, yeah, I REALLY like how the styling of this car isn't needlessly complicated... it's simple, bold, and, in my weird opinion, quite elegant for a tiny hatch.

Well, the scuttlebutt going around is that Mazda may drop the 2 from their American lineup after the 2013 model year... damn shame. It's a great little car. :(

If only they had, you know, actually advertised it.

#25, Because great cars getting killed off prematurely due to insufficient advertising has never happened before.

*cough cough Pontiac G8*

#25, I think part of has to do with the fact that the 3 gets better gas mileage, and is a bigger car to boot.

#27, Pretty much. And in this country if you want something small as a fashion statement you get a Fiat 500 or a Mini Cooper or a Smart ForTwo. Mazda + cute fashion statement probably just doesn't compute with American buyers. I see new Prius Cs EVERYWHERE now and they're almost all white or that ghastly orange color, and they're crap. I have no headroom in the back and the interior materials all bother me. The only new Yaris I ever see belongs to my neighbor's friend who visits every now and then. Hell, I don't even see that many Fiestas. If the Mazda 2 was a hybrid that got 45mpg they'd probably sell a crapload of them. The 2 makes more sense to me than a Smart ever will, and yet those damn Smarts are all over the place.

#28, hell, if Mazda wanted folks to take the 2 seriously, they should fit a small SkyActivD engine into it; and probably market it better. Maybe bring the 3 door over here? Does Chevy market a 3 door Sonic? I think having smaller cars over as 3 doors would make more sense.

Dude... if they had offered a Mazda2 with the Skyactiv-D, I would have been floored... perhaps my only complaint about the 2 is that it doesn't get the kind of mileage that one would expect from such a small, relatively-underpowered car...

...but, then again... I average 29.5mpg, with a heavy accelerator foot, and AC blasting to ward off the hostile Florida environment... I've read that people with "40 mpg" Elantras and Fiestas don't achieve that much better.

[edit] ...and, actually, I LOVE having it as a 5-door... it is so goddamn practical. And, surprisingly, it has more room in the rear seat than most subcompacts.

#30, hell.. my dad had a 2005 3, and got consistent 32-37 MPG in top gear at about 85-90. His A3 gets about the same with 40ish more horses.

#31, The problem, the 2 isn't geared for highway driving... at ~75mph, I'm at about 3200-3400rpm.

That wouldn't be a problem, except my commute to work includes a 20-mile jaunt on I-95. (My commute home in the morning is better... I take US1... lower speeds, fewer actual miles, and being so early, barely any traffic or red lights... actually saves me about 5 minutes. With traffic/red lights, it'd probably take 10-20 minutes longer than I-95)

#32, I know you don't drive stick, but do you think having a stick would help in your scenario? I'm also wondering what real world MPG would be for a 205GTi driven hard but not full-throttle.

#33, I always wonder if manual transmissions would get me better gas mileage... but I know that automatics are getting REALLY damn efficient... and traditional manuals are starting to disappear altogether...

...though, I'm pretty sure the drivetrain in the 2 is relatively out-of-date compared to most modern cars.

#34, can't be any more out of date than that in the Fiesta. I think newer autos are pretty good, but I do wish the manual stayed around longer, and wasn't exclusively available in cheap cars or sports cars. One of the most fun "everyday" cars I've driven was a V6 Altima with a 5 spd; pretty quick, and it and I finally saw what car magazines were raving about. Drove a 4 cylinder auto back to back (same year), and was like "what the fuck." The 4 cylinder auto made the V6 seem like a Ferrari, in terms of speed, acceleration, and how sweet the VQ sounds.

#35, Pretty sure the Fiesta has a completely different drivetrain... and some fancy-schmancy new double-clutch gearbox, or something... to get better gas mileage.

#36, hmmmm.. Yeah.. the Fiesta has a 1.6 with 6 spd auto. he 2 apparently has a 4 spd auto? I bet with a better tranny it's easily get 40ish.

Went and registered the car for another two years... and I decided to request a specialized plate...

I'll reveal it when it arrives in the mail. :)
