Description:
The Republic XF-91 Thunderceptor. Another of the many oddball late-40's early 50's forays into jet fighter design that resulted in planes that looked goofy or turned out to be expensive exercises in engineering with no practical uses for the resulting aircraft. |

The odd shaped wings are indeed thicker at the tips than at the roots, an attempt to alleviate low-speed stalling, a problem that plagued most jets of the era. It also had 4 rocket boosters in addition to it's lone jet engine, intended to give it short bursts of high speed but they expended fuel at such a rate that the Thunderceptor only had an effective flying time of 25 minutes... not nearly enough to be an effective interceptor. Two prototypes were built, both eventually ended up being cut up in mock crash-rescue exercises. One bright spot, the XF91's did manage to be the first US jets to go supersonic outside of a dive before meeting their fates.
