It might be the real one....it's my understanding that the car still exists, and is largely unchanged from the film except for a more souped-up drivetrain (as used in the film it actually had a stock 348 and 3 on the tree). This one has Impala badges, which were shaved off of the one in the film, but I suppose they could have been added back at some point.

It should be noted that Candy Clark (Debbie Dunham in American Graffiti) was at the table signing autographs next to the car. So it made sense to have at least a reasonable facsimile of the Impala present, whether or not it was the original one.
