Description:
Dan Wheldon, two-time Indy 500 Champion (including the most recent running), and once champion of the IndyCar series... 22 June 1978 16 October 2011

Truly a tragic day for American open-wheel racing.

With his talent and personality, he could have been a big part of a resurgence in the popularity of open-wheel racing and now he is gone. The sport, and all who love it, are diminished by his loss.

The biggest tragedy of this? Wheldon was instrumental in the development of the all-new 2012 Indycar race vehicle... if his accident had taken place in one of those cars, he would have walked away from the crash.

Sadly, even the safest open-cockpit vehicle in the world wouldn't have been enough to save Justin Wilson or Jules Bianchi. :(

Have to wonder if open-cockpit race vehicles may vanish in the coming decade or so...
