I remember heading to a local scrap yard with a friend to procure some component for a 2.2L 4 banger he was working on and seeing all the stacks of old wrecks stretching out into the horizon when I was hit by this deep thought that all those cars had been loved once; They had driven newlywed couples to honeymoons, or been gifts to teenagers that had just gotten their licenses. It was actually kind of depressing

#2, That's what makes junkyards depressing for me, too. I used to be excited when I'd go to my local yard and see cool old cars, then I realized that each one had had its death warrant signed by someone who didn't want it anymore, or it rusted out or some expensive part broke, or they couldn't afford to restore it, or died and their kids scrapped "that ugly old thing Dad had". I think what did it for me finally was when I watched a backhoe smash all the windows out of a straight, shiny late-model Ford Contour, stuff it full of garbage and crush the roof in so it could be dumped in a stack with all the other doomed cars destined for the crusher. It was just a Contour, but it looked like a perfectly good car they could have re-sold up front.

#3, (cont'd.)
I will say I felt more sorry for the Austin America, BMW Bavaria, '67 Opel Kadett, Saab 95, Honda 600, '89 6000 STE AWD, '90 Grand Prix STE Turbo, '73 Imperial, '51 Chevy coupe, and numerous awesome '60s-70s cars I've seen in junkyards that could have been saved. A Contour isn't much of a loss in the big scheme of things.

Interesting that there are 2 Hyundai Scoupes in this pile, try finding ONE of those today.

#2, That's always struck me, as well. I remember looking a ragged out late-'70s (round light) 4 door Chevette sitting behind a garage about 10 years ago, and that realization hitting me: Someone liked this car enough to buy it once. Probably even financed it, and put their credit on the line for it.
