Description:
2013 Buick Encore and Vauxhall Mokka

Only *slightly* larger than a Suzuki SX4 or Honda Fit...

...and I have to say, I'm really surprised and impressed with those dimensions and how it looks. I think this is a good move for GM.

Thoughts/Discussion?

Given how GM has continually tried to market Buicks as "upscale," I don't know if getting the brand back into the compact game is a good move.

Then again, I guess it could just be marketed as an "upscale" compact....but I'm pretty sure that's what they did with the Skyhawk, too.

The problem with the J-body Buicks and Cadillacs is that the bodies were essentially identical to Cavaliers and Sunbirds, save for a different fascia and trim pieces/taillights... underneath may have been different, but the car itself still looked cheap...

I think the Encore is excellent because the body is totally unique from anything else on the American market... yes, the platform/chassis is derived from the Sonic, and the engine is from the Cruze, but those pieces, in and of themselves, are not bad... and GM, supposedly, has spent a great deal of time tuning the suspension, trimming the interior, and putting massive amounts of sound-deadening in the glass/body to give the car a real quality feel.

I quite like this little thing so far. I'll be curious to see how it looks in the flesh. I've seen a few Veranos and I quite like them. I think Buick is finally back on track as far as their upscale/affordable image goes.

I will say that the Buick is much better-looking than the Opel equivalent.

Well. Almost three years on. I don't like these nor do I dislike them. I see them quite a bit, which, I guess means they're selling.. Which is good? I guess?

#7, First year or two, Buick was having trouble building enough to meet demand.

You mean an economical, small, but roomy and high-seating position vehicle with luxury amenities might appeal to some people? What a concept.

#8, I think the Volvo XC60 fills that role nicely, too.

I wonder if Fiat could coax Suzuki into bringing the S-Cross back over here? I think it looks good, and if made into a proper "luxury" vehicle, it could do wonders. :/

#9, The XC60 is more midsize, and competes with the Lexus RX.

#10, I always assumed the XC was a bit smaller? :/ I don't know. :/

After living with one for awhile (little brother has one, got when his Regal was totaled and wanted something smaller), I don't mind it. Rides nicely though the seating position is a little awkward. Gas mileage (for those who care) with a lead foot doing highway driving is about 24. Not particularly impressive, then again, what does get astounding MPG at 85 MPH.

#2, Well... GM fucked that up by selling the Chevy Trax, with minimal body alterations... so now the whole image of that vehicle and the Buick have been cheapened.
