Speaking of old magazine volumes... I just got, from eBay, the April 1970 Road & Track... it has road tests of some of the most iconic cars, plus the 11L Mercedes-Benz GT.* Even the old ads throughout are fun to look at.

Consumer Reports lambasted the Yugo for poor build-quality, cheap interior with easily-breakable fixtures and for sustaining more damage than any other comparable model of compact car in the 5 mph front and rear bumper crash tests. Interestingly, they did praise it for good general handling and braking, but ultimately said that you'd be better off spending the extra $2K to move up to one of the economy models from more established brands like Toyota and GM. Despite the bad review, the Yugo actually sold fairly well for it's debut year, the negative press didn't really become obvious until sales really started falling for the 2nd and 3rd years.
