Subsequent investigation by Phoenix police revealed that "William Nelson" was the assumed identity of William Bioff, a former employee of mob boss Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti. Nitti sent Bioff to California in the late 1920s, where he set up shop to collect for syndicate-controlled businesses in Hollywood, extorting millions of dollars from the film studios in particular, keeping several hundred thousand for himself. In the process, he became known as "the most feared man in Hollywood," even intimidating Columbia Pictures executive Leo Spitz into furnishing his home for him. His subsequent lavish lifestyle attracted the attention of the feds, who in 1943 put him on trial for tax evasion.
After a conviction and brief sentence, Bioff moved to Arizona and took up an assumed identity, living for a few years there until fate finally caught up with him. His killers have never been identified.
