Description:
For about 4 years between 1988 and 1992, this ad ran on page two in every issue of Variety. Character actor Zack Norman wrote, directed, produced, and costarred in this movie, filmed in New York in 1986, and it has never been released.

Rumors abound that it was produced as an "ash can" film to use as a tax write-off, but who paid for this ad for 4 years (and its purpose) is unknown.

Where does one find tidbits like this? (Granted, I find quirky tidbits like this myself from weird places... for instance, the same guy voiced both Johnny 5 and Frank the Pug [from MiB])

After some Googling, it appears this was referenced in Mystery Science Theater 3000? I'm guessing that's what brought you to it, considering you posted the ending theme from Space Mutiny on Youtube (and, awesomely, got a comment from the original recording artist)

#1, I saw a lot about the MST3K reference on Google, but I don't actually recall that episode. I found this due to a reference someone else made on a blog (Retronaut, I think) in an article about vintage Variety ads.

#2, You haven't seen Space Mutiny??! One of the top 10. Big McLargeHuge? Bold Bigflank?Bob Johnson? Youtube it and enjoy.

That was my biggest hangup with MST3k. A few references that's waaay out there. And a way out there reference doesn't equal funny. Only a handful of folks "Yahoo'ed" to find out what they're talking about.

Its Dennis Miller^12.

#3, No, I'm familiar with Space Mutiny....not only did I watch it the night it first aired, but I've also got it on DVD now. I just don't know the episode that referenced Chief Zabu.

#3, He was referring to the episode that referenced Chief Zabu that he isn't familiar with...

I know for a fact Skid is familiar with Space Mutiny... http://youtu.be/RO9Pxl7Y3lo (Skid's Youtube profile is RadialSkid)

#5, Yep. Realized that 3 minutes after I typed it.

The guy who wrote the theme commented. Cool! His singing is not that great. His voice sounds more like a parody to 80's music.

On Wiki, the director said he was out of town during the making of this due to a family emergency and left it in the hands of the assistant director. And he didn't sit in the editing room because...?

Watched it the first time it aired as well. Used to watch it when it aired at night when Joel was on it. But I kept passing out, especially on the black and white films.

#7, Show was called Mystery Science Theater 3000 back in the 90s. They sat and made fun of cheezy movies. They used a lot of references. There was a reference to this old article of a man who paid for an article for 4 years for a movie that never came out.

According to the filmmakers, they shelved it after a combination negative early preview and one of its backers went bankrupt.

In 2016, they recut it and released it. The trailer is on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/178231922

Reviews suggest that it's quite charming with great comic timing, and a time capsule to the sensibilities of 1980s comedies, with the worst thing said about it is that it's "uneven."

#8, Watched (mostly listened to as background static) all the old episodes. Hear the Chief Zabu references a few times and now no longer unaware of the 'Zack Norman as Sammy' mystery.

Mike was always better than Joel.
