The Camaro is the rougher of the pair overall....apart from weak paint, it has a broken driver's power window motor, a busted right door mirror, non-functioning A/C, non-functioning turn signals, a burnt-out muffler, a badly cracked dash, and oddly enough, missing interior sunvisors. Also 207,000 miles on it. Despite that, it actually runs and drives fine, with no smoke or unexpected noises or sensations.

Interior of the same. Filthy, will be clean once my steam cleaner comes in from Amazon: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...zps81325bdf.jpg |

The Miata is the opposite: Apart from a torn-out rear window and some minor wear (most notably the peeling steering wheel), it's in pretty decent cosmetic shape, and all the accessories (including the A/C) work. Unfortunately, it has a dead cylinder, and actually stranded me on the way home. I got it towed home, and still can't start it. I believe it's the spark plugs, plug wires, or possibly the distributor.

Interior. Even filthier, but in pretty good shape overwise: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...zps8595518d.jpg |

#3, To be fair, it's not as clean as it looks in the picture. The interiors of both are amazingly nasty.

The guy who sold me these cars didn't bother telling me until after I got them home that he had replaced the water pump on the Miata, and believes he didn't set the timing correctly (he apparently had to take the belt off for some reason). If the timing jumped on this thing, I'm going to be pretty pissed. |

Apparently someone cut off and half-assed spliced the Camaro's left front turn signal wire (read: taped one of the three wires to the socket and just left the other two hanging). Hell if I know why...I was just about to attempt a resplice when the rain started.
I've now ordered for the Camaro a fitted dash cover, both sunvisors, a right mirror, a power window motor, and a headlight polishing kit. I also just realized that the Miata is missing its right sunvisor (was the previous owner of these cars on some weird anti-sunvisor protest or something?), so I ordered a new one for it as well.
Speaking of the Miata, I'll be looking into its engine sometime next week....I've now thinking it threw the timing belt. Luckily, it's a non-interference engine, but still a bitch.

Update: Camaro's turn signals are working and it has a new right mirror. Also put on a new molded plastic dash cover....the dash pad was so cracked and sun-damaged that just pushing in on it with my fingers made it crumble and fall to pieces. Fucking mid-'90s plastics. In any case, the new cover is on and fits like a glove.
I've also discovered, via usage of a multimeter, that the driver's power window switch is defective. I've ordered a new one, but I have a sinking feeling I'm still going to have to put the power window motor in it anyway. That seems to be the way things go. The job is a pain, too: It requires drilling out at least four rivets.
I'm going to get a mechanic friend to look at the Miata, since I can't be arsed with pulling the engine apart right now, and I don't just want to leave it sitting. I'll probably have him pick it up next Monday. |

#11, Updates: The Miata is now purring away, and it's an absolute hoot to drive. Though the timing was slightly off, the real culprit was rain water in the spark plug ports. Apparently, the Einstein that owned the car prior to me left the hood up in the rain. In any case, I've been zipping up and down the road in it all morning with the top down. :) Now to clean it up and get a new top.
The Camaro's new switch came in, I connected it, and the motor whirs a little, but the window barely moves. Either the motor is worn out or there's an obstruction in the track. I bought a riveter yesterday, so I'm getting ready to go into the door next week. Feels like an adventure, albeit one I might not survive. :/

#12, New window motor is finally in, but the window still doesn't want to go down....it goes down in the back, but tries to lift up at the front. Turns out, someone has been in the door before: Not only was the plastic moisture shield missing, but all four rivets that connect the regulator to the door are also drilled out. I think this is what's making the window tilt....the motor is moving the entire gear set. I'll see about correcting that ASAP.
On a separate note, I have this silly habit of rarely wanting to drive the cars I really love, because I'm scared something will go wrong with them. I was this way with the Rambler, the Granada, and now the Miata, too. It's mostly just sat under a full car cover since October, only taken out for the occasional, ear-to-ear grin-inducing jaunt. Still saving up for a new top for it, though various other expenses (and my inexplicable purchase of an AutoArt VH Charger) have taken precedence. |

#14, Nothing new, really. The Miata's still fun, but I haven't done any new work on it. The power window on the Camaro still makes me want to tear my hair out.....the new motor is in, but the window only lets down about 2 inches and then just stops. I can't find any obstructions in the track. :/ |

The 4th generation F-body in a nutshell: The engines are fantastic. The transmissions are rough, but durable. The brakes are good. The suspension is adequate. Everything else, basically, is crap, designed by sadists, bean-counters, or in some cases seemingly both. Anyone who says the third gen is a worse car overall is sorely mistaken. Or a masochist. Or blinded by their love of the 4th gen powertrain. Or any combination of those things.
I've been away from the Camaro for a while, still trying to figure out which angle to attack it from. I've just today started the top for the Miata....I got a lovely tan one for it. This one is going to be a pain in the ass too, but not as much as the Camaro's power window motor.
