Description:
Thought that popped up in my head recently... I seem to have an unusual appreciation for economy cars that are *not* intended to be sporty...

These are three cars that came to mind... back when they were on the market, I took notice and thought very positively regarding them, aesthetically.

Even now, I look at them, and I think that they still hold up, visually. I still feel they just "work", stylistically. Good proportions, good styling tweaks, good lines.

KW: Refreshed Daewoo Lanos 3-door, 4th-gen Tercel coupe, Pre-facelift 2nd-gen Hyundai Accent 3-door.

#20, YES.

MX-3 is awesome too.

How bout the 200 SE-R or are those not cool-looking enough?

#21, I like the first-gen Sentra SE-R... the rest get a resounding "meh" from me... yeah, they're fast and cool to some extent, but they draw no emotional reaction from me.

#22, fair enough. I like the first one, and the '95-'99 SE-R.

I also forgot a car until just now. I found the 1992 Buyer's Guide from Motor Trend. Dodge Daytona IROC R/T.

Many of the cars mentioned here don't fit the "not intended to be sporty" bill. The Daytona, the Storm, the MX-3, and the NX were all sold as cheap sports cars, despite their humble underpinnings.

#24, hmm.. what cars would you say fit the bill?

#25, The ones at the top are good examples. Really most economy cars aren't intended to be sporty.

#26, would you say a Storm GSi fits the bill?

Early Focus ZX3. I actually wanted one when I was in high school. Just like this: http://photos3.automanager.com/0026...41802c3_640.jpg

If we're going back a ways, I like the 1981-82 Toyota Starlet, the late-70s Corolla Liftbacks and of course the Pinto.

I saw a ZX5 and Impreza hatch parked next to each other today, amazing how similar they look.

economy cars that aren't intended to look/be sporty but are..

1990s Chrysler/Mitsubishis, including the Colt/Mirage even up to its later years
Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and hatchback (post 2008)
2003-2007? Scion xB (not "sporty-looking", perse, but I've never had a problem with the styling.)
1986?-1994 Mazda 323 hatchback
Mitsubishi Cordia
Honda Civic EF/EG generation
Renault 5
Citroen Saxo
Peugeot 205/206
Renault Clio

#36, 1st-gen I respect because GM Europe took real risks with its styling, and, IMO, it was not ugly. (That is HEAVILY up to subjective debate, though...)

2nd-gen was basically a Corsa (which was very handsome in its own right) with a retractable hardtop roof... I actually quite like notion of retractable hardtops... as long as they're engineered properly and reliable/watertight. (I'm casting a stinkeye your way, 1st-gen VW Eos)
