With the introduction of the Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf, Fiat 500e, Chevrolet Spark EV, this, and so on, I've actually changed my mind, and now have come to the conclusion that electric cars are no longer a joke, and are pretty close to being a viable option for many, MANY people...

#1, Same deal for me - but about a year ago. You could also add the Fit EV to that list.

I can look at the EV's and not feel as if I would have to reorganize my life to fit around them. As soon as batteries with a 400-500km range are available - I can't see much of a reason to commute everyday with an ICE car.

Given that so many ICE cars are mere apathetic transportation pods more or less controlled by apathetic people, your point is pretty sound. This sounds like a good choice for people who just want a BMW badge and hate that whole "Ultimate Driving Machine" thing.

#3, I wouldn't discount the "Ultimate Driving Machine" and what it is suppose to embody. There will be a place for those who demand a car to be more than just a means of transportation. Unfortunately - I can see it becoming an expensive alternative to EV transportation and available to a slim minority of consumers.

People don't 'hate' the "Ultimate Driving Machine". The overwhelming majority are indifferent to it and just want a BMW to get around in - not a BMW to drift around a corner with.

It may be a generational thing too. Gen Xers and Boomers blaming Gen Y for their acceptance of EV's - and for not wanting an expensive ICE car with expensive insurance and expensive fuel costs to drive on increasingly congested roads; all bought with money they don't have.

Somewhere between the Boomers and Gen X - the car you drove described who were you were socially. As I get older - I can't understand how people allowed that to be.

All I know is I have zero interest in them. I'll be driving internal combustion, no matter how much it costs. I don't care if I have to start powering them with chicken shit.

I sat in this thing at the BMW stand, got out and said, "If this is the future, we're all screwed."

#5, I remember how a person once detailed how cars actually SAVED horses, rather than replacing them... it stopped the rampant horrible treatment of horses, and freed them up to be treasured and enjoyed, rather than merely means to an end for conveyance.

I believe, when EVs/hyrdrogen-fuel-cell/etc become viable replacements for ICE, in both price and practicality, ICE vehicles will still exist, and those that have them will treasure and celebrate them even more. ...and we will have less concern for dwindling fossil fuel supplies... so the possibility of driving and enjoying ICE in the future is actually more solid.
