Guy at work has an old beetle outside his garage he wants to kinda do this to, except he'd be making a panel-van kinda back end to it.

Either way, he's going to do SOMETHING to it, because he's tired of people knocking on the door wanting to buy it off him, and even when he threw a tarp over it, they still kept coming because you can't hide that shape from those who know.... :P

#2, Not bad for a Hitler-initiated ripoff of a Tatra that both Ford and Austin refused to take ownership of after the war...

#3, Ford or Austin could have built Beetles? This I didn't know.

#4, Just think, they could have replaced the Austin Seven with the Austin Nein.

#4, From what I understand, part of the German economic recovery after the war was to get their factories up-and-running as quickly as possible, even if that meant foreign ownership. Both Ford and Austin were offered ownership of the surviving Beetle production line/factory, and rights to the Beetle design/engineering, for very little money, as long as they promised to invest in improving the factory and surrounding area.

Both companies tested examples of the Beetle, and both decided it wasn't worth it.

#7, To be fair, those first-run Beetles had horrible build quality, but, that was because they were being made on production lines that had literally just had the rubble swept off of them and tool and die machines with shrapnel holes through them.. you could forgive them for thinking it wasn't going to work.
