A sizeable aesthetic improvement over the outgoing one, but am I wrong for thinking the W140 was the last S-Class that honestly looked like an S-Class should?

#1, Agreed. I like these, and I do think the last true "S-Class" was indeed the W140. The W126 and W111 are my favorites of that lineage, with the W116 following close behind.
