The problem with these ultracompact, ultralightweight, ultraefficent quasi-cars is that at this point, 80% of the American public is too fat to fit in them, the remaining 20% either don't drive or have too much dignity to ever be seen in one. |

#1, Along those lines though, there's an interesting reversal in the current new car industry, in terms of interior room...
It really seems, the smaller the car, the more room there is for the driver; conversely, the larger the vehicle, the more car companies decide to "cocoon" the driver, with high bolsters on the seats, enormous center consoles, door panels that encroach... it's ridiculous.
I have a family member who is unfortunately extremely large, and, when it comes to new cars, he can only fit in the "small" ones... GMC Terrain, Yukon, Acadia? Not enough driver's room... but he fits in the Buick Encore. BMW 4 and 6 series convertibles? His leg is pinched to the point where it would start falling asleep... but he fits in the 2 Series, and even better in the older 1 Series.
When carmakers produce a small car, they want to make it "seem" as room as possible, so they push everything away from the driver, have thinner door cards, and, many times, don't even have a center console/armrest. Said family member had no problem fitting in both my old Mazda2 and current 500c. |
