Description:
For the few of you who might be interested in model railroads, here's some of the layout at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, CA. Built and managed by the Alameda County Central Railroad Society. There are two sides, HO scale and O scale.

#4, Well, in the 60's, the Union Pacific did experiment with gas-turbine powered locomotives. Final analysis, even at 1960's prices, the rate they went through fuel was unacceptably high. (They carried old, converted steam engine tenders behind them just to hold enough fuel to make it through their runs, the on-board tanks that can carry a conventional engine across a couple STATES just wasn't enough)

Though, that particular locomotive with wings isn't one of the turbines, it was a single engine carrying two regular engine powerplants, you can see the dark "gap" in the middle where you could walk between them. It was another attempt to cut down on the need to have so many individual locomotives on the roster (The UP always had a thing for BIG steam engines, and it took them many years of trying with diesels before they realized that as impressive as that "one big engine" at the front may LOOK, it's not efficient to run a train that way.

#6, Actually, I have, well, the RESULTS of when locomotives go flying anyway.... as in, I read the resulting NTSB report, cringing the whole time.
