Description:
My new car: Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9 DI-D, a.k.a. The Mitsushiti. Possibly the first car I own that I have no feelings towards, at all. |

Built by Nedcar in the Netherlands on Volvo S/V40 platform with a Renault Common Rail Diesel F9Q2, it is probably the most un-japanese Japanese car ever. It is also identical (save for body) to this: 78222 115hp pulling about 1300kg/2870lbs. A 2002 car with a relatively low 150.000 km / 93.000 miles, originally made for and sold in Denmark with features like extra rust proofing and heated seats, I am shocked to find that the general quality is much lower than my 1991 BMW. I do not intend to have this thing for longer than 1-2 years. |

#1, Bad: rust spots, water ingress in the rear, random electrical issues, shockingly bad suspension (the typical 'hard on quick bumps, soft on body transitions and road undulations etc.' stuff... they should kill people who design suspension that way, seriously), random trim falling off/rattling from time to time, driving position for gorillas (you need long hands and short legs). Hood does not lift up when latch is released, unable to open the hood at all at the moment since the cable fell out, cabin side.
Good: color, body shape looks OK from some angles, can keep 140kph trouble-free for 1000km while pushing 50+ MPG, multi link in the back, would be able to pass the TUV roadworthiness test (confirmed), can survive a tourist lap of the Nordschleife.

#3, Like I've said, it looks good from some angles but this facelift is trying to hide a 90s blob styling. My dad's Space Star more angular styling holds up much better, especially with the optional side skirts and alloy 15s with low profile tires. Also, you cannot see it on this picture but it's actually a 5-door liftback. |

Did it have hubcaps on it originally, or was it always on steelies, and what's the fastest you've driven it? |

#5, It came with original hubcaps, actually looks better with it (to my surprise) but I took them off to try and improve brake cooling and reduce the risk of them flying off: they are a bit beat. Normally I drive with them on.
Fastest I went was around 170kph on the Nordschleife, somehow I still did not have an opportunity to try it on the autobahn (traffic). It should top out at around 190kph if it still has boost after 12 years. |

#6, Actually, once I might have gone faster than that but at Fuchsroehre (a big drop followed by a steep climb: there's a major compression there, barriers 50cm off the track and a gentle curve to further upset the car) the suspension bottomed out rather violently, I got dazed for 1-2 secs (too many Gs I suppose) and almost lost it: now I take this spot really carefully.
Oh BTW, it's this spot and this is what happens if you bottom out or put one wheel off the tarmac or get scared/dazed and lift off for split second: http://youtu.be/ml8B6_FNs64

Despite being used in traffic jam infested commute with barely enough time to heat up everyday, it just scored 43MPG. Guess that's one up side. |

#13, Hm, now I've checked it's Imperial. One thing I learned having driven two common rail diesels is that the worst thing for them are short commutes whne they barely have a chance to heat up. My Pug 206 (slightly technologically older engine) got 31 MPG (imperial) wihout any traffic jams on a short 15 min commute... which was exactly the same as it got on a track day o_O Those results come from almost exclusively driving at around 1500rpm and shifting up at 2000rpm (cold engine and turbo).

Have I told you about the time when both turbo hoses (airbox-turbo and turbo-intercooler) blew at the same time at the Nordschleife? First tow in my life and it had to be one that is considered one of the most expensive in the wolrd (just google KFZ Bongard). And you also have to pay the Marshals that come secure the spot where your car crapped out. Everything is charged for (any spills, debris clean up, barrier repair, etc. etc.) and you get your copy of a neat 'Accident Report' form/bill afterwards. Major cards or cash accepted. |

First rally done (no videos this time) and I have to reluctantly say it's not a bad handling car, just soft. There is just the right amount of lift-off oversteer in the chassis and you can adjust the car with the throttle quite nicely. I did not know that until know, since the Nords is not a place to test the limits of your car if you value your health and wellbeing. |

#17, That might be a problem, you cannot technically use a camera on the Nords and God knows when I'll race again. Untill I brush up on my German and get a car that is plated, insured and taxed in Germany (I can get the Carisma Germanized but until the cops tell me to, I don't plan on doing it) I can only run in competition during my visits in Poland. |

I'm back in Germany and today coming back from work the car crapped out on the entrance to a roundabout, in heavy trafic. I suddenly lost all electricty. I managed to push it off the road with my friend and after about 15 seconds of being under the hood I discovered the negative terminal was loose. I suspect the mechanics did not tighten the screw after they were done welding the exhaust (another thing that had to be fixed... the catalyst housing magically split on a weld for no apparent reason) and put it back in. How can I be not fucking paranoid about mechanics? |
