...when I was a kid, I learned that scribbling over tampos with a dry-erase marker, letting it sit, then scrubbing it off with a dry-erase eraser, did a pretty good job of removing them... but I only ever did it on cheaper diecasts...

I used Goo Gone. Apparently nail polish remover works as well.
