Description:
Indian Chief Vintage.

There were two failed attempts since 1999, by smaller companies, to produce "new age" Indian Chiefs that were essentially overpriced novelty items built from modified, off-the-shelf Harley components.

I want to thank Polaris Industries for pooling their resources, and knowledge gained with their Victory brand, to produce a true spiritual successor to the big Indians of old.

I also think it's fantastic that Polaris isn't really overcharging for these, either. The two failed attempts I referred to, they were asking $30,000+ for their Chiefs...

The Polaris-engineered/built Indian Chiefs? They start at ~$17,000. Granted, a fully decked-out Indian Chief Roadmaster will approach $30,000, but that is one HELLUVA loaded bike. The Vintage like this one? $21,000.

I will say, though, the touring fairing that they designed for the Chieftan and Roadmaster isn't exactly my cup of tea... http://www.hdforums.com/wp-content/...ianChieftan.jpg

I don't care much for the body skirting beneath the seat. I can't shake the feeling that that area should be more open.

#2, I do agree with you there... kinda reminds me of a Vespa scooter fairing under the seat... but that's my only gripe.

Just to give you an idea how Polaris is NOT rampantly overcharging for an Indian...

The base model Chief, the "Dark Horse"? http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-...der-black-smoke

It's $500 cheaper than a base model Harley-Davidson Fatboy. http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_U...oy-special.html

I can tell you which one *I* would choose.

#4, Same here, though given the choice I'm probably save a third of the money and get the Indian Scout.

#5, I think that's another example where Polaris has shown they're willing to price their Indians competitively... put an $11,000 Scout against an ~$11,000 Harley Sportster 1200, and it's a pretty close comparison, with the Scout winning handily on power and performance, with the Sportster coming a bit ahead on comfortability.

Of course, if you want to save even more money, you could get one of these 91128 :P

Looking at that Harley 750, actually... it shares quite a bit of styling similarities to the Indian Dark Horse...

Thought I'd go to their website, and through their build a bike feature, and image editing software, I'd piece together what, in my mind, would be the Chief I would want, money no object.

I don't like the fairing on the Chieftan or Roadmaster, so I used the Vintage's simple windshield setup... but I love the tank graphics and hard bags of the Chieftan... and, to top it off, I used the Vintage's whitewall tires and the Dark Horse's blacked-out engine.

#7, Very nice-looking bike.

I tried customizing a few on the site, but I think my favorite is the cheapest gloss black Scout, with no options (except maybe straight-cut pipes).

#8, If I were to get a Scout, I'd have to go for the saddlebags and windshield... maybe even a driver's backrest... but, as you mentioned when I posted an image of the Scout a while back, I wish the front fender had a slightly different design... it looks like part of it was hacked off.

#7, Well, now they've introduced the "Springfield", which is a Vintage, but with the Chieftan/Roadmaster hardbags... still doesn't have the nicer tank graphics, whitewalls, or blacked-out engine.

#8, They now have an even CHEAPER Scout available, with less chrome, smaller bore engine, vinyl seat rather than leather, and one fewer gear in the transmission (in the middle range... low gear and top gear are unaffected.)

#10, Apparently, I was wrong... the Chief Classic/Vintage actually have different frame/fork geometry than the Chieftan/Roadmaster... the Classic/Vintage are more stretched out, whereas the Chieftan/Roadmaster have less rake for better handling and ride. The Springfield uses the Chieftan/Roadmaster layout... I sat on all different types of Chiefs, and consider the Springfield to be the most comfortable, by far.

"This Tuesday, Indian will unveil a whole new line of bikes!"
"It's a brand new era for Indian! This Tuesday!"

...

"Oh, here's a cheaper Roadmaster with Chief Vintage bags. Yay." *jazz hands*
http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-...c-thunder-black

Way to overhype, Indian. I was so hoping they would actually do something drastic, like incorporating some now-abandoned Victory engineering into a new line of bikes, but, nope.

#12, Feh. I still like the cheap Scouts best out of their new line up, though admittedly the Chief Classic looks pretty good in red and black.

#13, Just curious what you think of the Victory Octane (though, it's a bit late now... they start production of the bike, and a few weeks later the whole brand gets deep-sixed) http://www.victorymotorcycles.com/e...cc/octane-black

#14, It actually looks a lot like the Scout, except with a bit more of a modern style. I don't like it as much as the Scout, aesthetically, though it's hard to argue with the specs and price.

Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised... they've started raising the prices on them, and introducing an über-expensive high trim level Roadmaster... http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-us/motorcycles

I think they started out by undercutting Harley's prices, and pricing their cheaper-to-produce "Dark Horse" models even cheaper than that... but since they've been a sales success, so they nixxed sister-brand Victory and don't seem so concerned with being cheaper than Harleys... and the Dark Horse models have proven super popular, they're no longer cheaper than their chromed brethren (other than the base Dark Horse)... still better than Harley, that charges a $3k premium for their blacked-out models.

The standard Scout in metallic jade would be my pick of the litter, even without price as a factor.

Just add in some chrome laced wheels, a few chrome accessories (mainly the headlight bucket and some frame inserts/engine accessories), a black solo seat, and a Stage 1 exhaust with chrome end caps. Maybe $14,000 worth of bike, and I'd take it over any of their other models.
