#3, Even that. I mean, in small(er) towns, like Lawrence, the dealers have been consolidated to where its all brands under one roof.
Theoretically, most GMC customers buy their trucks because they dislike the Chevrolet fascia. Then you have the Terrain, and for people like me (and I'm sure others), they like the styling as opposed to the Equinox. I think GMC as a whole is a good idea for people who want luxurious SUVs but don't quite want the ostentatiousness of an Escalade.
Business case, yes. Product differentation, slightly. Marketing is there, and so are the customers. I don't see a problem, as they're not pulling a Mercury and rebadging cars as well. |

#3, I've never understood that, either. GM for some reason has repeatedly referred to GMC as a "core" brand, though. |

#7, It isn't the sales numbers at the end of the year that GM gives a shit about. It's the per-unit revenue that GMC can garner that Chevrolet and Ford cannot do.
Ford can have the sales crown for the F-150 year after year and they'll advertise the hell out of it. GM can still make just as much money selling slightly less combined pickup sales each year if each GMC unit brings in an extra 5K-15K more than comparable Chevrolet or Ford could. Call GMC the 'Buick of trucks' - and in some ways they are. But they have higher MSRP's - look better than the Chevrolet twins - and regularly attract clientele who have more disposable income than typical Chevrolet buyers.
The reason GMC was kept was because it's rakes in cash with each unit sold and it has a base of consumers who don't want a common Ford or Chevy; if only for the image of what a GMC presents. Hell - even the name Denali was rumoured to be eventually spun off of GMC and exist as a range within GMC like Range Rover is within Land Rover - and if that happened - then it would start stepping on the toes of Cadillac.
So yeah. GMC was too valuable for GM dump in 2008 - and still is. |

#9, It's an image and marketing thing. Personally - I think the Sierra looks much better than the Silverado in any trim - and calling it "professional grade" strives to make that distinction that the truck is better than the Silverado in some perceived manner. I would never get either pickup - but if you're the kind of guy concerned about your public image and want to look like an accomplished construction management type that you probably are - then you might want to drop your pennies into a GMC.
I suppose - now that I think about it - GMC is banking on the insecurity a person has of their public image; that they think they don't look the part and want to by owning a flashy truck. Whatever soothes those ruffled feathers and rustled Jimmies. |
