Sadly, like so many of them, it's fallen into the hands of a teabagger who turned it into a tasteless rolling political screed..... complete with Confederate Flag, DTOM sticker and one that read "Future Civil War Veteran" , you may all slap your foreheads........ now.

#1, "Future Civil War Veteran"?! Seriously? Growing anticipation that slavery will once again be briefly legalized - only to be outlawed again that would cause for another destructive regional/civil war in US of which this man is only too willing to be a conscript?

Or is he just someone who nervously lives day to day mentally fapping to the idea that a civil war (founded on some divisive left/right matter) is due any day now and that he can't wait to unquestionably throw himself into battle if only for the future glory and reverence of his efforts that would come his way at the end of the war; no mention if he would be on winning or losing side of course.

Geez - America - is the political climate really as bad as I think it is? Do you HAVE TO look upon your neighbor as being "the enemy" if they don't share a similar political view as you?

#2, Well, to be honest, whilst it's easy to boil down the Civil War to slavery, it was really a long-simmering grudge match concerning the balance of power between the North and South... North favoring a stronger federal government, and the South favoring stronger states' rights... admittedly, one of the bigger issues being states retaining the rights to have slaves.

Federal Government versus States' Rights is still a relevant and hot-button issue these days... and with the religious whackjob Dixiecrats having invaded the Repbulican party after the Democrats went for Civil Rights in the '60s, they want to retain the states' rights to continue being prejudice, judgmental bigots and zealots.

I think it's more a basic failing to fundamentally understand HOW republican government (as in the system, not the party) works, and misinterpreting basic things like separation of powers, judicial review of legislative actions, and history to the point that they have NO ABILITY to discern reasonable and proper action from their FANTASY version of it, based mostly on preconceived notions and how it's portrayed on TV/film. Therefore, they honestly think the country is on the verge of civil breakdown because their highly-flawed version of how it works, suprise, doesn't match reality.

From what I've seen over the years, your average person isn't getting dumber, but the 10% that already didn't get it are getting louder and more obnoxious because they STILL don't get it and HONESTLY believe their "way of life" is coming to a subversive end by shadowy conspiracy and corrupt politicians. THey're basically to the 21st Century what the milita nuts were in the 90's

#4, It's sad... in the '80s and '90s, conservatives actually were the "silent majority" on the political scene, with the liberals being the outspoken firebrands... but now that the former Dixiecrat religious nutjobs have completely taken control of the party, in the form of the "Tea Party", they're the outspoken firebrands.

People that watch Fox News, and Fox News only (ok, and Drudge Report and Limbaugh), they've insulated themselves into their own little world where they believe it's now "Us vs. Them" and nothing more. They've completely detached themselves from reality, and only feed on themselves more and more, dragging themselves down the rabbit hole of bitterness. My father, unfortunately, is one of them. For as brilliant and educated as he is, it saddens me so much to see.

#5, It's his generation that's doing it en masse, my Dad is in the same boat, he rails about "Activist Judges" and "Liberal Plots" and clearly is just parroting things he's heard, because when I (who have at least a modicum of actual law experience under my belt) challenge him, he can't articulate his points, and just repeats them.

He STILL regularly denounces the fact that criminals get "Time off for good behavior" no matter how many times I tell him that the state of PA DOES NOT OFFER that, and, has "Truth in sentencing" laws, meaning, short of an executive pardon, you don't get out until a set % of your time is served, he still insists it exists.

I registered as a Republican when I was old enough to vote, in the 15 odd years since then, the party has gone so bonkers, I actually threw out my card in disgust.

21st Century GOPers are hopelessly out of touch, the only thing that will bring them back to center is when their similarly out of touch constituency dies out

#6, Was a registered Republican upon my 18th birthday. I actually am a registered Republican now.

...but I vote generally Democrat. (Except in cases where the DNC candidate is a whackjob... quite a few of them still out there)

I actually remain registered the way I am so I don't get sneers and stink eyes at the polling station. (This is a VERY heavily Republican county... when Lewis Black put on a show, I imagine every Democrat in the area was in that auditorium :P )

I tend not to vote much, University Town = Very Liberal = Democratic Lock for Decades. I kinda stopped because it was pointless for me to spend the time to make a "protest" vote, at least for anything with national stakes. The Dog Catcher and Fire Hydrant Inspector might be Republican, but beyond that, no shot. And as time goes on, I feel that's a better and better thing.
