At 7:25 AM on November 10, 1980, southbound traffic on I-15 in San Bernardino encountered a sudden heavy fog bank, with visibility unexpectedly dropping to 5-10 feet. Traffic, which was naturally somewhat heavy, mostly slowed to half the normal 55 MPH speed limit. A 1978 Freightliner towing a pair of 1963 Utility tandem trailers was in the fourth lane (that is, furthest lane right) approaching the Highland Ave ramp when a white, late-model Dodge Challenger cut him off from the third lane to make the Highland exit. The driver of the Freightliner braked hard to avoid collision, and was struck hard from the rear by a 1977 GMC half-ton pickup, which underrode the back of the trailer. Both occupants of the pickup were killed. The Challenger continued off the exit ramp, its driver never identified.

A 1972 Datsun 510 traveling at approximately 30 mph approached the scene, but slowed even more when he saw the driver of the Freightliner waving a flashlight from the side of the road. He struck the rear of the pickup at fairly low speed, then exited the vehicle to get to the side of the road. A 1980 GMC tractor towing a North American van lines 1977 Kentucky trailer was behind the Datsun, but managed to stop within a few feet of hitting it.

A silver 1978 Datsun 280Z, driving 50 MPH through the fog, attempted to avoid the North American truck, but glanced off the left rear and shot left across all lanes of traffic, plowing into the east perimeter wall, blocking lane one.

At the same time, a 1973 Freightliner cabover pulling a 1967 Fruehauf flatbed trailer struck square in the rear of the North American truck, in turn pushing it into the Datsun 510 and crushing the 510 against the rear of the GMC pickup. One of the pickup's leaf springs punctured the fuel tank, and a fire started which engulfed it and the remains of the Datsun, as well as the trailer of the front truck and cab of the rear truck. A 1979 Freightliner towing tandem 1979 Fruehauf trailers stopped behind the flatbed, avoiding colliding with it, but a brown 1978 Ford Pinto wagon then plowed into the rear of it, killing the Pinto driver.

CB chatter by now was mentioning the accident in the fourth lane, so one trucker (1979 Kenworth, 1974 Trailmobile trailer) moved over to lane three. He was struck from behind by another Kenworth/Trailmobile combo (1977/1978, respectively), bringing both vehicles to a halt in the third lane.

Another 1977 Kenworth, towing 1970 Fruehauf tandems, attempted to avoid the crashed Pinto and sideswiped both Kenworths in lane three and glanced off the wrecked Pinto as well. A yellow 1975 Honda Civic struck the rear of the second truck, and in turn it was rear-ended by a 1980 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup, which in turn spun into the right side of a red 1978 Honda Accord traveling in lane two. Another brown Pinto wagon (a 1976) plowed into the rear of the yellow Honda, killing the driver of the Honda and a front seat passenger in the Pinto. Now all lanes are blocked.

A gold 1974 Dodge Colt in Lane 3 glanced off the rear of the same Kenworth the yellow Civic hit, and spun 180 degrees into lane two, where it was struck head-on by a yellow 1979 Triumph TR-7. The Triumph was in turn rear-ended by a blue 1979 Datsun 510 wagon. The Datsun glanced off the Triumph then hit the Colt head-on. A 1977 Toyota pickup then struck the Triumph, the blue Datsun, and the red 1978 Honda.

A white 1980 Ford Courier with a camper shell and a white 1979 Ford Fiesta driving in lane two swerved to avoid other traffic slowing down, and ended up in lane four. The drivers of both vehicles braked hard to avoid the wreck just a few feet away, and were both struck by a 1979 Peterbilt cabover towing a Timpote trailer (this truck and the Fiesta are pictured above). A white 1979 Datsun pickup struck the back of this truck at an angle, and was in turn rear-ended by another 1979 Peterbilt towing a 1979 Alloy flatbed carrying aluminum sheets. Due to the angle, the Datsun truck was pushed out of the way instead of being crushed by the two larger trucks, and the rear Peterbilt then struck the front one. Its load of aluminum sheets shifted forward, crushing the cab and badly injuring the driver.

The front Peterbilt was pushed forward, shoving the Fiesta into the back of the 1978 Pinto wagon and 1979 Freightliner in lane four and shoving the Freightliner forward into four individuals attempting to help extricate drivers of other vehicles, killing two of them.

All told, 24 vehicles involved, 7 dead, 17 injured.

Sounds like a really bad situation, made particularly worse by the Challenger and 280Z... if those drivers aren't already burning in hell, I'm sure there's a place reserved for them.
