I know they're popular, but due to personal experience, I have a fair amount of disdain for this generation of SL.

In junior high school, one of my best friends, his mom had a mid-'80s Mazda 626. When it came time to replace it, she didn't just replace it with one car, but with TWO. A 450SL and a 450SLC, both from the '70s.

I'm sure the thinking was, "These things are overengineered and built like tanks. They'll be durable and reliable."

HA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! [/maniacal]

They were nothing but rust-prone trouble-magnets.

One memory that sticks out in my mind; me and my friend were cruising in the SLC during our high school years, and the engine died. We were a block from another friend's house, so I stayed with the car and my friend ran over. Said other friend had an '80s K5 Blazer with a brutish V8. During the attempted jumpstart, it was drawing so much power that the Blazer actually started struggling to stay running. Merc had to be towed.

To be honest, I never really "liked" these. I think my thinking was "hey, this is a 'car person's modern classic, and it will win me internet "cool" points if I photograph it and post it online. To be honest, even though they're starting to thin out here, I don't shoot them as much as I used to. Same story for BMW E30s.

I actually love almost every other generation of SL. Two exceptions (and these are for purely aesthetic reasons) are the post-facelift R230 (fifth generation) and the pre-facelift R231 (sixth generation). That was a very poor period for Mercedes styling, and bled over between those two generations.

I like world-spec R107s, but I've always despised the US market headlight and bumper combo. One of the most egregious victims of federalization, alongside the Rover SD1 and the Fiat 500.

#3, Yes. Agreed there. I think the R129 has always been my favorite, probably because it's the first "big" diecast I got. Maisto (I think) 1:18 of it when I was fairly little.
