Wow... this thing really did remain essentially unchanged, aesthetically, for a dozen years... yet it was such a groundbreaking, stellar vehicle, I'm of the understanding that it's still competitive...

Looking on Wikipedia... they intend on keeping it production as the "XC Classic"?! (edit: Oh, in China. Duh.)

#1, From what I read until very recently it was also available with a great V8 engine - maybe still is in the US.

#2, Aye, transversely-mounted V8 developed by Yamaha. Noble use it as the basis for their engine in the M600.

#3, correct.

The V8 was only in production for a few years, too, making it fairly rare. These came out in 2002 (as a 2003) and lasted until model year early 2015 in the US. They still look modern, today, unlike some other 2002 SUVs (Jeep WJ, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Trailblazer, I'm looking at you.)

#4, Like I said, it was groundbreaking... it pretty much set the standard for all future CUVs. I do remember Jeremy Clarkson being nothing but glowing of its magnificence... IIRC, he bought one for his wife, to replace the Land Cruiser she'd been using.

(In fact, her having an XC is the reason why Clarkson managed to find that one-pound 760GLE for Top Gear's first cheap-car challenge... she was at the dealership for servicing, and saw that car in the trade-in/intake lot, and asked about it (knowing Jeremy was prepping for a new "cheap car" film for the show)

#1, I never even noticed that these were virtually unchanged since 2002. That's as long as I've been on RoN! They are that enduring that they just seemed to be part of the landscape.

#6, I can't seem to find information on who styled the 1st-gen XC90... but they did a damn fine job. For a design to endure and still look fresh after all those years is no easy feat.

#7, Doug Frasher, who also designed the C70, and the first generation S80.
