All their current problems aside, VW sure knows how to make solid, handsome performance vehicles for the common man...

...if only they had focused on that these past few decades instead of trying to out-volume GM and Toyota... they had a good thing going with their fanbase that appreciated interesting, well-engineered vehicles with a certain passion to them... but then they started trying to make "lowest-common-denominator" snoozemobiles and pushing for higher and higher statistical numbers on a graph, without caring about HOW they reach those numbers...

#1, Yes and no. I still think the GTI and Jetta (the nice-spec ones at least), and the Passat are all nice cars. I tihnk the Tiguan is doing okay, too, but they let it linger on too long. I think VW still doesn't think highly of America, and I say this only because they continue to offer better cars overseas.

#2, Oh, I agree... it's almost like one can FEEL the cynicism that with which VW views the American market... same with Toyota (*insert rant about dated chassis and drivetrains smothered with fake grilles and fake windows*)

I'd have to say Ford, too, to an extent. They're progressively making the trucks uglier and uglier, and they wait until the last minute to update cars they brought us from their European branches.

#1, It's called greed, and indeed, it is a deadly sin. Porsche did this starting with the watercooled 911 (996), many other brands followed suit... but it does not seem to hurt sales much, all that counts in marketing and people who do actually buy these cars just get a credit/lease and get rid of them after 2-3 years - who gives a fuck about reliability after that??? Only used car buyers and their cash rarely reaches the manufacturer.

#4, Well, to be fair, we actually got the new Mondeo years before Europe... and their American lineup of cars all look pretty damn nice, IMO. Their trucks though, yeah... yeesh.
