I still hear inconsistent stories on these... some say they were an offshoot of a doomed "FWD F-Body" project in the '80s (much like the Probe was to the Mustang), some say it was completely bespoke...

I find the latter harder to believe, as that would mean GM spent shitloads of money on a bespoke FWD personal luxury car and then decided to push forward with a horrendously weak marketing campaign, with no clear direction of what market the car was aimed at.

#1, It was the latter. GM wanted personal luxury coupes for its upscale divisions on the premise that Cadillac had the nicest one. So we got the Toronado and later the Trofeo version, the Allante, (shelved was the planned four-door), and the Reatta.
