To be fair, those first-run Beetles had horrible build quality, but, that was because they were being made on production lines that had literally just had the rubble swept off of them and tool and die machines with shrapnel holes through them.. you could forgive them for thinking it wasn't going to work.

Though, the mid 70's Fords did show that where the Edsel was heading style-wise when they pulled the plug (enlarged but not obscene central grille) wouldn't have looked that bad....

It did introduce some revolutionary mechanics for the time, it had some of the same stuff as Wolf 3d, like hidden secret doors, and collecting bonus loot in addition to killing enemies, but also had things like enemies dropping ammo proportional to how much they'd fired at you before being killed (8 units of ammo if you ambush a guy, but only 2 if you got into a long running fight with him), the ability to pick up health from wall-mounted machines or get tiny boosts of ammo or intel from "informant" NPCs in the level, doors that could only be unlocked by finding remote switches, environmental hazards from spilled acid to explosive "splash damage", it just got overshadowed by Doom that did all of THAT and more....

And his VTEC move is inexplicably more effective when the AI plays him than when you do....

I've been retrograming the PC early 90's, getting all the old Wolfenstein clones off Steam that I could never beat back then. (Shadow Warrior, Blake Stone)

I still remember the exact street corner I was on when I saw my first Lumina APV, the styling was an eye-catcher, you can't say less.

Ah, wonder if the caved in roof was from a tree or just a long line of people jumping up and down on it, little by little.
