Y'know, honestly, the bidding war between BMW and VW, and the eventual split-up of RR and Bentley is the best thing that could have happened to both esteemed British marques.

Not only did they finally get their own unique identities out of the deal, but the pettiness resulting from the fall-out from the bidding war meant that both BMW and VW dumped TONS of investment into the respective brands to try to one-up each other.

If both had been acquired by the same owner, the Bentleys would have probably remained simply rebadged RRs, the 6¾L V8 would have stayed dead instead of getting a decade-long reprieve, the Phantom probably wouldn't have been as grandiose as it became, and no chance in hell would Bentley have gotten a chance to win Le Mans again.

As much as I mock Bentley's aesthetics of the past ~10-15 years, particularly the massive overuse of chicken wire in the fascias and enormous, complicated headlight bezels, they really are incredible machines.
