Speaking of FMA, in the original I'll admit to crying at Hughes' funeral. But if anyone asks, you didn't see me do it.

Well, over eight years after first watching the *First* Stage of Initial D (and watching Second, Third, and Fourth in quick succession after that... watching Fifth Stage last year) ... I sat down earlier tonight and watched Final Stage.

A relatively satisfying conclusion to the series. It's incredible that (counting when the manga started), the series took two decades to run its course.

Next year, I get to finish another two-decade-long series in the making, when I receive, in the mail, volume 14 of Neon Genesis Evangelion (Sadamoto's manga adaptation)...

...but, back to Final Stage... It was one helluva last battle, but the epilogue felt kinda like "going out with a whimper"... oh well. Looking forward to the "New Legend" series of full-length movies, which will essentially retell the whole series in a compressed manner, with superior animation from the get-go. (First Stage's animation is laughably bad)... and being compressed, no more needlessly drawn out races or filler. Yay.

#202, Also, I have to wonder... does every AE86/AE85 Toyota in Initial D *have* to be white? I mean, seriously... there are no less than FIVE different ones throughout the series, and every single one is white.

#203, Well, in the first season, Itzuki dreamed of getting a red and black AE86 Levin and racing alongside Takumi's Sprinter. But since that's was just a brief fantasy shot, I don't guess it really counts.

The commentary in the End of Evangelion DVD is still one of the best in all the commentaries I've listened to.

For Initial D, I only read a English dubbed manga. Was the Tokyopop version of the anime really that bad?

#205, The Japanese-language/English-subtitled version of Tokyopop's anime release was alright... well, except Second Stage, where they didn't include unedited video. But their English-dubbed version? Ugh.

#206, The only time I heard really bad English editing is when they mute any background sound just to put the English person's voice over it and the voice actor's calm expressions don't match the scene.

"Oh no we're falling."
"That's impossible. How can he have that much power."
"Tell Jacob I tried"

Eleven Years. Goes by so fast. http://photo.ricecop.com/pics/anime2017.jpg

That "Magical Play" DVD is the only one from this original stack that I still have. Bought a better AzuDai set years later that had more extras, I now have an LE-set of Cowboy Bebop on Bluray, and the movie on a separate Bluray... and my copies of Gunsmith Cats and Battle Angel are both legit now. (Yes, sadly, the two in the main picture were bootlegs.)

#187, Well, I wasn't wrong about Funimation continuing to grow. Sony Pictures just acquired a majority stake in them with a ~$150 Million valuation.

...and speaking of Funimation, they released Makoto Shinkai's your name. theatrically, which I went to see. One of THE BEST anime films I've ever seen... will totally buy any Limited Edition Bluray they release for it.

Bakuon!!... very light series, not exactly masterpiece theater... unexpected fanservice that is VERY strong, which is ill suited for such a "cutesy" series... and after 12 episodes it just kinda... ends.

But, it's about a bunch of high school girls that enthusiastically ride motorcycles, so I loved it. Notable in that it doesn't use facsimile brands (for the most part)... they ride Hondas, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Ducati... and name-checks Harley-Davidson and even uses proper brand names of helmets. Kinda surprised they used Ducati licensing, because they make fun of that brand mercilessly for how often the bikes break down.

...on the flip side, they "reference" Triumph, Norton and BMW, but never directly by name, and actually pixelate-out the logos. The Norton reference made me laugh, because one character sees one and says, "I know that brand! They made my anti-virus!"

...well, it's about fucking time. A Silent Voice has finally been solicited for American home video release... in #209 I stated "your name." was one of the best anime films I'd ever seen; A Silent Voice is almost right up there. Absolutely amazing movie that deals with the subject of bullying, the long-term fallout that can result, and different ways people deal with being the bully and/or the bullied.

The ending... the god damn ending makes me well-up every damn time.

Taking so long to get an American home video release is probably due to the fact it featured The Who's "My Generation"... was probably a big sticking point in licensing costs.

On the subject of anime, even though I had seen Castle of Cagliostro twice since I was a kid, it wasn't until I bought the DVD about a week ago and watched it again that I've realized it's one of my favorite movies of all time....if not in my top 10, then definitely in my top 20. A more perfect action/adventure movie simply does not exist.

#194, Yasuhiro Takemoto, director of many, many fantastic Kyoto Animation shows/movies, including Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and the Haruhi Suzumiya TV series and movie, has been confirmed to have perished in the arson attack last week.

Veteran animator Yoshiji Kigami is also feared dead. He was an absolute veteran having done key animation as far back as the '80s for Grave of the Fireflies and Akira...

Just a terrible tragedy at the hands of a horribly deranged individual. :(

...just watched Girls' Last Tour on Amazon Prime... everything I read leading up to it portrayed as a "slice of life" series set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world... slice of life my ass, that shit was DEPRESSING.

So I'm sitting here, crying my eyes out. Watching the first season of Fruits Basket (2019) ...I watched the original (loosely adapted in 2003) anime back in 2007 (posts 134/137), and later read the entire manga series (cried then too). The 2001 anime was pretty good, until they ran out of material and made up their own ending (that the original creator hated)

This new adaptation has the original creator as an executive producer, and it's very close to the original manga... and it's... it's just beautiful. It's got extremely high production values.

#215 - I later read the final volumes of Girls' Last Tour manga, to see where the story went. Only got even more depressing, but still beautifully told. The ending is... well... slightly open ended, and I prefer to believe the more positive spin on it I've seen some people online expound.

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?
An anime about weight-training high school girls. It is gloriously bonkers, completely self-aware, revels in memes, has a completely unexpected comic relief character, and a narrator that is 100% sarcastic and fourth-wall breaking. I was smiling throughout the entire series.

Ok, but, seriously, this is a damned addictive opening sequence: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1979775292038161 ...for a series that doesn't actually exist.

Well... the twelfth volume of the Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series has just been announced... kinda out of the blue, since the eleventh volume came out in May... of 2011.

Toradora!
I'm really late to the party on this one (it came out in 2008), but DAAAAMN that was good. On the first watch-through, I thought it was mostly merely ok... but then it kept building to the conclusion, and I'm finding myself going back and watching parts of it over again, and I adore it. It hits some amazingly strong emotional crescendos. Also, surprisingly enough for a romance anime, it has one helluva hard-hitting, passionate action sequence smack dab in the middle of it.

Also, it has one of the most addicting opening credits sequences I've encountered in a long time... even moreso than the one for the "fake" series two posts above. The song just keeps driving. https://youtu.be/Y3Xmzu0OtS8
