that side pipe came straight from the factory..... if you think that's weird you should see how the exhaust looks from under the car... it kinda looks like they were trying to make a little stick figure LOL

The side pipe's stock on the 340 TA. Most performance-optioned Challengers were shipped with bigger engines than that, but the TA was sort of the Dodge equivalent of the Plymouth AAR Barracuda and the Ford Mustang Boss 302. It was the more handling-oriented variant. But most people buying Dodge Challengers in 1970 probably were more concerned with straight-line speed, so the 340 TA is pretty rare.

TA= Trans Am. as in the trans am races of the late '60s, not the car. (which is named after the series, btw)

I heard that it was ironic how the Pontiac Trans Am actually did really poorly in Trans Am racing.

didn't compete; it didn't exist until after the series ended. Firebirds didn't do too well, though. AMC was really dedicated to the series and did quite well. also small block mopars did well, but mustangs were oftentimes hard to beat because they weighed so much less than the other cars.

The whole trans am series didn't last very long did it? Like I'm thinking less than 5 seasons? Am I right or full of it?

the original series ran from '67 to '73, so six seasons. they have sinced revived it, to my joy (i'd love to destroke a ram air trans am and run it) but it didn't run throughout the seventies.

The Pontiac Trans Am came out in 1970. And the Trans Am did try to compete in the Trans Am racing series, but since the car had been designed for a 350ci engine, and not a 305ci, its handling dynamics were kinda screwed up in Trans Am, because Pontiac's engineers didn't bother reworking the handling of the car for the smaller engine. I think Pontiac only participated for one year (1971) but did so poorly that they gave up.

actually the GM 305 was developed specifically for trans am racing, to fit SCCA rules. they were destroked 350s, which gave them good torque and huge rev capability, which seems like a good combination. I think pontiac competed for 3 seasons, and never did too well, but I don't think they did too badly. Give me a few minutes, I'll post the history of TA racing as soon as I look it up... I've got a book on it...

Ok, so I got some bad information, sorry. The Trans Am just never earned it's namesake, that's about it. It's was, and still is a great, fun car, though.

from '67 to '73 the winners were:
'67: Horst Kwech and Gaston Andry tied for first, both driving Alfa GTAs
'68: Jerry Titus, driving a mustang
'69: Mark Donahue, driving a Camaro
'70: Parnelli Jones, Mustang (Horst Kwech won under 2.0 liter again in an alfa)
'71: Mark Donahue, AMC Javelin
'72: George Follmer, AMC Javelin (told you AMC was dedicated, Milt Minter came in 2nd in a firebird)
'73: Peter Gregg, Porsche Carrera

oh, the series was not discontinued after '73. It's just no-one wants to talk about '74 because in 1974 Porsche Carreras got the first 5 spots in the final standings, total 8 out of the top ten were Carreras...

However, America struck back in '75 with Corvettes taking the first 4 places, and a total of 6 corvettes in the top ten.

Those are some big time names too,I see at least one Indy 500 winner, you'd think TA racing would have caught on, but instead NASCAR oval track stuff became the ticket. Though they do have at least 2 road courses they go to each season.

those are the best ones. I love trans am racing, they had it houston a couple of years ago (Houston Gran Prix) and I think it was better than the IRL races...
