So, Project A-Ko was one of the earlier OVAs I watched, and it is, indeed fantastic. Only problem, the original masters were lost decades ago, and all subsequent releases were based on an old Japanese Laserdisc release. The current rights-holder, Discotek, was spending a huge amount of money on cutting-edge AI-based techniques to upscale and clean up the footage for an anticipated release later this year...

Meanwhile...

Another anime licensor, AnimEigo, has the license to another old OVA series, MADOX-01, which also had "lost" masters. A few months back, they did some research and realized that may have been due to an error in how an old Japanese anime film vault was organized. They scoured the vault, and managed to discover the error, which led them to the MADOX-01 masters. They're currently running a Kickstarter for a new release (I'm supporting it)… but, what else happened? They found an unlabeled set of masters sitting on the shelf next to it. They got permission to open the container, and discovered, to their absolute shock, that it was the original masters for Project A-Ko.

They immediately informed Discotek, who subsequently put the brakes on their then-current efforts, have changed gears, and now will be doing a brand-new release with the newly-discovered masters. I'm thrilled.

Super Cub

A short series about a high school girl, emotionally closed-off from the world around her. She begins to open up to the world and people around her thanks to the influence of... riding a used Honda Super Cub. The product placement is pretty blatant at some points… not surprising as the original novel series was created as part of Honda's celebration of the Super Cub's 60th anniversary.

I did enjoy the series, though. It's pretty slow-paced (insert Honda Super Cub being slow joke here). I'll be honest, I've got a bit of an inkling to test-ride one of Honda's newer Super Cubs, out of sheer curiosity.

OddTaxi

It is indeed an odd show. Main character is a quiet, cynical taxi driver who starts getting embroiled in other people's problems and murky situations because of the passengers he happens to transport. I'm only a few episodes in, but I'm really curious where the plot is going.

Also, the main character is a walrus.

#223, Was promising, but gave up after episode 6. Too many characters, too many coincidences. Being anthropomorphic animals aside, it was just too confusing and too much for the suspension of disbelief. Read through synopsis of the remaining episodes, and the plot just continued to get more convoluted.

#209, So, Sony bought Funimation, America's biggest anime licensor.

Last year, Sony also bought Crunchyroll, America's biggest anime streamer.

This week, Sony bought RightStuf, America's biggest [formerly] independent anime retailer.

They're poised to hold a nigh-on monopoly stranglehold on the anime industry in America.

In the immortal words of Han Solo, "I've got a bad feeling about this."

#225, Would you rather it be Netflix?

#226, True. At least, for the time being, most, if not all, anime featured on Crunchyroll ends up getting a regular physical media release. Netflix-exclusive anime either never gets put on disc, or, if it does, it's stupid expensive.

But who knows where this path will lead us.

#229, And you're like "GET YE FLASK" and the game is all "YOU CAN'T GET YE FLASK" and you've got to stand there all day wondering how you're going to get ye flask because the game certainly isn't going to tell you.

I'm certainly not telling you

So, I've quite enjoyed most of Makoto Shinkai's films (Weathering With You was a slight let-down; still good but not up to his usual emotional level)

His most recent film, Suzume saw a theatrical release in America a week ago, and I went in blind, knowing nothing about it. Really quite enjoyed it. It's also a very VERY strange film. Even moreso than some of his prior stuff.

#225, Sony did it. They shut down RightStuf, and integrated its retailer functions into Crunchyroll's store. End of an era.

My first, and last, shipments from RightStuf, spanning 17 years: http://photo.ricecop.com/pics/17years.jpg
