there is a company in WA called 'Front Panel Express' - you can download their software and make your own metal top-plate. They mostly make industrial equipment but they allow hobbyists access too. The lettering isn't screen-printed, but is actually etched then filled (with white paint in this case).
This is an EF86 connected as triode as the gain block stage. The line/headphone output is done by a 6922 configured as a White Cathode Follower. It can drive just about any amplifier around since the output impedance is ~33 ohms.
How does it sound? Not tubey in the normal sense - but kind of a mix of solid-state (bass / detail) and tube (naturalness). Cost about $330 to build. |

I think early Harman Kardon SS stuff has a very similar sound to the one you described above. |
