Description:
1973 Mercedes-Benz 220D
My family has an interesting history with these... my grandfather (father's father, in Lancaster, PA) bought a tan one brand new. After almost a year with it, he loved it so much that he began dreading the situation if he ever had to replace it. So what did he do? He bought a lightly used 1973 220D that was dark blue, and stored it in his garage as the "replacement" for the tan one if it ever needed a replacement.
It never did.
My grandfather drove that tan 220D until my father moved back to PA in 1986, and my grandfather bought himself a brand new 1988 Buick Park Avenue Electra (with a nifty reverse-opening hood). The Buick was "good enough" to replace the tan 220D, so my grandfather gave my dad the tan 220D, and kept the dark blue one in his garage, no longer as a potential replacement car, but as a collectible. He'd drive the dark blue 220D ever so often, but never as a daily driver.
In 1990, my dad felt it was time to get a new car, and frankly, he was growing tired of the tan 220D's slow acceleration (0-60 when it was new was 24 seconds, can't imagine what it was after almost 20 years) So, he bought himself a 1990 Dodge Monaco (my dad always loved French cars for their smooth ride, and the Monaco covered that beautifully).
After buying the Monaco, he sold the tan 220D, which had 375,000 miles on the odometer and was still in amazing condition.
Sometime around 2000-2002, can't remember specifically, my grandfather sold the dark blue 220D to some diesel Mercedes aficionado in Virginia... IIRC, it had less than 60,000 miles on it. |
