Description:
"This is the "corpse" of an old KOMO-TV news car that was involved in the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Early on that morning, KOMO photographer Dave Crockett, who had been rotated out a couple weeks before, returned to the volcano on a hunch - and without anyone at KOMO aware of his plans. He nearly lost his life when the volcano erupted, videotaping an eleven-minute "march through darkness" narrating his "last words". The car was recovered on an old logging road in June of 1980, and was auctioned off to the owner of a gift shop/restaurant in Kid Valley.
The car (a 1978 Mercury Monarch with a mere 48,000 miles on it), which has been sitting here since, has badly deteriorated. In 1990, the car was still driveable and was very much intact. In the mid '90s, condition deteriorated, and currently the car is but a former shell of itself." |
