Description:
In 1996, Michael Kranefuss, owner of Team 37, saw the Mark VIII, which shared the MN-12 platform with the Thunderbird, as the logical replacement for the Thunderbird. The team built a NASCAR car based on the contour of 1996 Mark VIII. Wind tunnel tests were done on the completed car at the Lookheed plant in Marietta Georgia on May 7, 1996.

The car attracted a lot of attention during the two day test at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 8-9, 1996. John Andretti drove the Mark VIII for those test laps.

All that stuff is quoted, I didn't write it.

at this point moving to this would have been pointless. 97 was when the front got redesigned and 98 being the last year. oh what could have been though

This woulda been rather cool, since the first official Nascar race ever was won by a Lincoln. (Lincoln won another race in 1949, and twice more in 1950, but that was it for the marque in stock car racing)

#2, Yeah, what could have been...maybe involvement in Nascar might have saved the Mark VIII from the corporate ax, a la the Monte Carlo. ...and if that had happened, we wouldn't see this bullshit of common templates started by the 4-door Taurus stock car crap.

yeah if it had been used in Nascar, and of Ford had put the 5.4 in it as there was talk of, maybe that would have got sales up enough to keep it around

So, apparently, Kranefuss wasn't the *only* team owner curious about possibly running a Mark VIII-derived body.

Saw another prototype in person, yesterday, at a museum. Penske Racing and Lincoln-Mercury collaborated to produce a prototype Cup car in 1996 that had a Mark VIII front fascia, hood, fenders, and greenhouse, but had Thunderbird side panels and a Town Car decklid. The aerodynamics that resulted were incredibly good, with more downforce, but less drag, than the outgoing Thunderbird body, and Lincoln-Mercury seriously considered producing a Mark VIII-derived street car to make that body legal, and were considering naming it the Lincoln Marauder.

Simultaneously, Ford was developing the Ford Taurus NASCAR body, and found its aerodynamics were similar, if not better than the Lincoln prototype, so they went that direction instead.

So far I've been to:

- NASCAR Hall of Fame (plus watched the Talladega race live in their widescreen theater with 200+ other NASCAR fans... which was a treat)
- North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame and Museum (where I saw the aforementioned Lincoln prototype)
- Hendrick Motorsports campus + museum
- Front Row Motorsports race shop
- Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing campus + museum
- Trackhouse Racing race shop (and got to see their pit crew practice up close)
- Joe Gibbs Racing race shop
- JR Motorsports race shop
- Penske Racing race shop
- Stewart Haas Racing race shop
- North Carolina Transportation Museum (built out of a restored Southern Railway roundhouse complex)

...and I'm still planning on visiting the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Mike Curb racing and music museum, Richard Childress Racing museum (and perhaps his vineyard), and the Richard Petty Museum.
