Thanks to Doug DeMuro, I now know that these were essentially rebodied Jaguar XJR-15s with a new Nissan-developed powerplant.
Doesn't hurt their image, IMO. Also, the aforementioned powerplant's design/engineering was actually sold to McLaren, and formed the basis of ALL of their road car V8s since 2011.
