In the mid 60's, there was brief period of experimentation with AWD chassis configurations in F1 as rule changes allowed for more powerful engines, and all-wheel drive seemed to be the logical way to get that extra power to the road.

Unfortunately, pretty much all of them ended up heavier than their RWD counterparts, and mechanically unreliable as well, retiring early from events or finishing 6 or 7 laps off the pace. They also tended to understeer, making them tricky to handle. (Graham Hill called the AWD Lotus he once raced "A death trap")

By the 70's, they were all consigned to museums or the scrap heap, having been rendered obsolete by advances in tire and aerodynamic technology.
