Should note, Lund's name is written on a piece of duct tape stuck to the door, covering the name of Marvin Panch, who WAS the scheduled driver for the car. Week before the race, Panch was doing some high-speed testing in a Maserati at the track, crashed, with the car bursting into flames. Lund, a respected underdog driver who went to Daytona without a ride, was one of the first to run towards the inferno and helped pull Marvin out of the car. ("Tiny" Lund was quite a sizable chap, at 6'5")
When Panch, in the hospital, was asked by his car owners (the Wood Brothers) who his choice would be to replace him for the 500, he immediately asked for Lund to drive. Lund won the race by never changing tires. He simply paced himself to conserve tread wear, and when leaders had to pit for tires (a very lengthy process at the time), and/or had blowouts near the end, he just cruised by and took the lead and eventually the victory. |
